📜 Elmira Big Ball Softball League Rules

Finalized Rules for Consistent Play • 2026 Season (Updated May 26, 2026)

Standard Rules

1. ASA/USSSA bats are allowed
2. Big balls provided by league; teams must provide their own softballs (52/300 ASA stamped)
3. 3-up home run rule
4. Games start with a 0-0 count
5. 1 courtesy foul per at-bat
6. Foul line rule: If it lands outside the pole line it is a foul ball. Bases must line up with foul poles.
7. Teams may bat up to 11 players
8. Batting team provides the umpire
9. Plate and mat are strikes
10. Pitch height: 6 ft to unlimited for men; 6 ft to 12 ft for women
11. Home team is the first team listed on the schedule

Short Handed Rule

1. You may play with 8 players as follows: 6 guys + 2 girls or 7 guys + 1 girl
2. No more or less than that
3. Cannot bat extra — must play the 8 in the field and provide a catcher
4. Do NOT have to take an out

Field Specific Rules

1. Field 3: If the ball goes in the water, it is an out. Play is stopped.

Running Rules

1. Pitcher and catcher may be used as courtesy runners + 1 per gender (guy for guy, girl for girl)
2. Runners must use the orange safety bag at 1st base. 1st baseman must touch the white bag only.
3. If 1st baseman touches orange bag, runner is safe.
4. If runner turns toward 2nd base after running through 1st, they can still be tagged out at first.
5. Safety line at home: One foot must cross the line standing. No sliding at home.
6. Catcher must have one foot on the plate (not the mat). No tagging runners. No contact at home.
7. No stealing bases or leading off. Runners must stay on the bag until the ball is hit and has made contact with the bat.

Forfeits and Rainouts

1. Forfeits will not be rescheduled and result in a loss
2. Rainouts: If 4 innings are completed, it is a finished game
3. Rainouts or cancelled weeks will be added to make-up weeks
4. Games will be called if cancelled by 4:30 PM

Strict Rules

1. Teams are responsible for picking up their trash in the dugouts. Continuous issues will result in team suspensions.
2. Any fighting or unsportsmanlike behavior is zero tolerance and will result in player or team suspension.
3. To be eligible for playoffs, players must have played in at least 5 regular season games.
4. Rosters are closed internally. You may add new players, but playing on more than one team will result in suspension for the entire season.
5. 4-Inning Limit: All doubleheader games are strictly 4 innings maximum (50 mins). Captains cannot alter game lengths.
